An eternal haze of cloudy rain hangs over the towers of Ravnica. Dressed in weatherproof clothing, the cosmopolitan citizens go about their daily business in bustling markets and shady courtyards. Through it all lie ten guilds - crime syndicates, scientific institutions, church hierarchies, military forces, courts of law, buzzing swarms and rampaging gangs - fighting for power, wealth and glory.
These guilds are the basis of power on Ravnica. They have existed for millennia and each has its own identity and communal function, its own diverse collection of races and creatures, and its own distinct subculture. Their history is a web of wars, intrigue and political machinations as they vie for control of the plane.
