A curse of death afflicts anyone whose body rises from the dead. Those who are exposed to the curse decay and rot, and all efforts to prevent this have failed.
The souls of the dead, however, are all held captive in an artifact of necromantic power. Only its destruction would free the imprisoned spirits, allowing the dead to be revived.
